Koucha

Koucha is one of the rare Japanese black teas with great elegance.

Characteristics

In Japan Koucha (black tea) is just produced in very limited quantities. The producer Mankichi Watanabe created this elegant black tea from the variety Kanaya Midori, usually used for green tea. This tea acquired its simultaneous lightness and complexity because of the variety of tea plant chosen by Watanabe. Watanabe mixed the leaves of the first, second, and occasionally even the third harvest, generating the Koucha from their oxidation, and obtaining it’s characteristic floral notes. Furthermore, the tea was matured in stages over two years, which makes it very aromatic and intensely profound.
